Chemically represented as Al₂(SO₄)₃·nH₂O where n can range from 0 to 27, it exists in different hydrated forms, with the octadecahydrate (n=18) being particularly significant. When dissolved in water, it forms an acidic solution due to hydrolysis. Though often colloquially called "alum," it's important to distinguish that true alums are double salts while aluminum sulphate is a simple salt.
